{"id":1957,"date":"2023-11-01T17:21:29","date_gmt":"2023-11-01T17:21:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/theatreone.ca\/?p=1957"},"modified":"2023-11-01T17:21:29","modified_gmt":"2023-11-01T17:21:29","slug":"theatreone-40th-anniversary-season-announcement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theatreone.ca\/index.php\/2023\/11\/01\/theatreone-40th-anniversary-season-announcement\/","title":{"rendered":"TheatreOne &#8211; 40th Anniversary Season Announcement!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"center\"><b>TheatreOne celebrates 40 years with a spectacular new season of professional live performances.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Nanaimo\u2019s very own professional theatre company, TheatreOne, is thrilled to announce our 40<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0Anniversary season.\u00a0 Founded in November 1983 as The Vancouver Island Shakespeare Festival Society, TheatreOne has brought over 250 professional productions to our community.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-CA\">\u201cAs we approach our 40<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0anniversary season, with a new strategic plan in place, TheatreOne is excited to offer programs that build on the very best of our past professional theatre performances and that will engage with more diverse communities over the next forty years\u201d, said Graham Pike, TheatreOne\u2019s President of the Board of Directors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The 2023\/24 season kicks off with the first show in our\u00a0<b>Just Kidding for Kids\u2019\u00a0<\/b>series,\u00a0<b><i>Through My Eyes<\/i><\/b>, by Quebec dance company Bouge De La on Sunday, November 26<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0at 2:00pm.\u00a0 This spectacular explosion of colour, shape, and movement will keep your young theatre lovers totally entranced. An ode to the power of imagination,\u00a0<em>Through My Eyes<\/em>\u00a0stimulates the child\u2019s senses and brings us back to one of the loveliest things about childhood: a tireless capacity for wonder.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Just Kidding for Kids\u2019<i>\u00a0<\/i>series continues with two more great performances \u2013\u00a0<i>Penny Pom Pom<\/i>\u00a0on Sunday, March 10<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0and a return of Dufflebag Theatre with their hilarious interactive retelling of\u00a0<i>Cinderella<\/i>\u00a0on April 13th.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<b><i>Penny Pom Pom<\/i><\/b>\u00a0show is an exciting multimedia experience for young kids full of music, storytelling, and magic. Penny is a colourful ball of energy who embodies creative confidence and artistic freedom. Kids will sing and dance along to her catchy and original guitar-driven music about magic, creativity, nature, animals, and the seasons.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><i>Dufflebag Theatre<\/i>\u00a0returns to Nanaimo for a single performance of\u00a0<em>Cinderella<\/em>\u00a0with all the familiar characters including the lovely Cinderella, a flitting fairy godmother, an ugly stepmother, a dedicated messenger, and of course, the handsome prince making appearances in this family friendly interactive version of the much-loved story. In this refreshing adaptation of the classic fairy tale,\u00a0<em>DuffleBag Theatre<\/em>\u00a0invites audience members into the show to play the main parts!<b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>All Just Kidding for Kids performances will be held at the Malaspina Theatre (Vancouver Island University).\u00a0 Tickets are available online through the TheatreOne website TheatreOne.ca .<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Mainstage Series Kicks off with a stunning new production of the Canadian classic musical\u00a0<i>Billy Bishop Goes to War<\/i>.\u00a0<\/strong>From feats of derring-do flying in the skies, to the horror of the trenches, through the halls of Buckingham Palace, to inside the human spirit,\u00a0<b><i>Billy Bishop Goes to War<\/i><\/b>\u00a0follows the incredible adventures of Canada\u2019s greatest WWI flying ace. Damon Calderwood brings a fresh interpretation to one of Canada\u2019s most enduring plays, making this musical full of humour, hellfire, and the boldness of an extraordinary career of this military hero. We join Billy Bishop as he reconciles the ecstasy of flying with the horrors of war.\u00a0 The show runs December 1<sup>st<\/sup>, 2<sup>nd<\/sup>, and 3<sup>rd<\/sup>, at the Malaspina Theatre.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In May, TheatreOne returns to our roots by producing the World Premiere performance of Jennifer Wynne Webber\u2019s\u00a0<b><i>Wild Geese<\/i><\/b>.\u00a0 TheatreOne initially workshopped the show in 2019 as part of our ongoing efforts to support local British Columbia playwrights.\u00a0<b><i>Wild Geese<\/i><\/b><i>\u00a0<\/i>is a moving and uplifting play about learning to follow your heart, even when it feels like you might be on a wild goose chase, and learning to love, even when people change beyond recognition \u2014 yourself included.\u00a0 This heartfelt comedy will run May 15<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0to 18<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0at the Malaspina Theatre.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Tickets for the Mainstage series are available online through TheatreOne.ca<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Finally, TheatreOne\u2019s\u00a0<b>Emerging Voices<\/b>\u00a0series returns in the new year.\u00a0\u00a0<b>Emerging Voices<\/b>\u00a0is an annual series of workshops and public readings of three new, original plays by local and regional playwrights. Participating playwrights benefit from dramaturgical support before, during and after the workshops and have the opportunity to engage with professional artists during the workshops.\u00a0 Ultimately their plays will be read before live audiences, and the playwrights will receive valuable feedback from actors and patrons.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Workshopped plays this year include Lily Chang\u2019s\u00a0<b><i>Leila Roils the Seas<\/i><\/b>\u00a0(January 28<sup>th<\/sup>)<i>,\u00a0<\/i>Olivia Etey\u2019s<i>\u00a0<b>Woman Against Gravity<\/b><\/i>\u00a0(February 11<sup>th<\/sup>), and Brianna Bock\u2019s\u00a0<b><i>Diving Bell<\/i><\/b>\u00a0(March 24<sup>th<\/sup>).\u00a0 The readings are by donation and will be held at 2:00 pm in The Port Theatre\u2019s Harmac room.<\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en-CA\">David Mann, TheatreOne\u2019s Artistic Director says \u201cAs we move into a new season, we are carrying forward our ongoing commitment to bringing the best in live performing arts \u2013 and especially theatre \u2013 to Nanaimo audiences of all ages.
